Beat It

One of the darling ladies I work with is organizing a team from KLAS to walk for Breast Cancer Awareness in the 2010 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure event on Saturday, May 8 held in Salt Lake City. It's such a great cause I wanted to give a shout out. It's also one of the days I wish I had a time turner necklace . I'll be in Millcreek Hollow in Marriott-Slaterville that day cheering them on from afar. I'm sure donations are always welcome... You can support the cause too by Joining/creating a team , registering to "Sleep in for the Cure" , or supporting the KLAS team! General info

Shhhhh!

Here is the secret to weightloss and good health : “If we could give every individual the right amount of nourishment and exercise, not too little and not too much, we would have found the safest way to health.” ~attributed to Hippocrates

Exercise makes me sick

Last month, my mom tried yoga, but quit because it made her extremely nauseous after each session. One of my friends at work and I were talking about exercise and nausea and decided to google connections between the two. The information found was interesting. Most of it came from commentary on chat boards, based on e-people's experiences. Nothing seemed too out-there overall, so I am jotting it here as a reminder of what to or not do the next time I feel sick rather than feel the burn. Exercise pointers "from those who know": * Drink . Dehydration can cause nausea. Drink plenty of water before and after exercising; sip during your workout. Exercise such as yoga kicks up toxins in the body and water helps flush them out. Be sure to drink lots of water even several days after a yoga class. (Just don't drink too much as that can also cause nausea.) * Fill the tank . An upset stomache may mean your body needs water, electrolytes, and protein. In short, your fuel tank is e...

Maturity v. Age

I found a questionnaire that scores emotional intelligence, something I've been pondering for the past week or so. I found it interesting and wanted to share. What happens if you get a negative score?!? Please rate each item as outlined below according to your life experience. Assign: a "1" score each time you answer "Rarely", a "0.5" score each time you answer "Sometimes", and a "0" score each time you answer "Often" to each item in the questionnaire. Then add up your total EMQ score. Questions: 1. I look to others to validate my decisions before I act on them. 2. I tend to follow rather lead others. 3. Taking responsibility frightens me and so I avoid it. 4. Being on my own makes me feel uncomfortable. 5. I rely on others to make me feel secure. 6. I tend to make snap decisions. 7. I rarely stop and think through what I'm going to do next. 8. I tend to make impulsive decisions. 9. I'm generally an anxious person....

Pleasantly Painful

On Monday night Renee and I hit our first Zumba class, followed closely on the heels of two tribal dance classes a couple of friends and I are taking on Tuesday nights from LaRa Zorn . In Zumba and the classes we worked on our abs. Needless to say there are ab muscles in there somewhere and I've definitely been feeling them since. More abs in tonight's practice? Bring it!

In Search of a Little BALANCE

Recently I read an article about weight loss and really liked the acronym for maintaining and improving health: balance. B is for BREATHING Enhance your oxygen delivery system. More oxygen means more physical energy, more mental energy, more emotional energy, and additional fat burning. A is for AWARENESS Listen to your body... it is your best coach. Ex: How do you know if you are drinking enough water or sleeping soundly? Listen to your body. L is for LIQUIDS Drink plenty of pure water each day (8-10 glasses). Water increases your metabolism and is an energizer. Divide your body weight by 2. That is the minimum number in ounces of pure water you should drink each day. A is for ANTIOXIDANTS Supplement your body's natural supply of vitamins and minerals. Joe Dillon suggests taking a high-quality multivitamin/mineral (3 times a day or as directed), extra C (ascorbic acid - 1000 mg 3 times a day with food) and Gamma E Tocopherol (1 time a day, 400 IUs in the...

Pearls Before H1N1

A friend at work emailed me the following message by Dr. Vinay Goyal about the H1N1 flu. It's pretty interesting and may help us all stay more healthy. Dr. Vinay Goyal is an MBBS, DRM, DNB (Intensivist and Thyroid specialist) having clinical experience of over 20 years and has worked in institutions like Hinduja Hospital, Bombay Hospital , Saifee Hospital, Tata Memorial, etc. Presently, he is the Nuclear Medicine Department and Thyroid clinic at Riddhivinayak Cardiac and Critical Centre, Malad (W). The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/throat. In a global epidemic of this nature, it's almost impossible to avoid coming into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions. Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation is. While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps, not fully highlighted in most o...

Green Smoothie Girl

I recently received an email from the Green Smoothie Girl : Today we continue debunking the mainstream media positions that you may have believed for a lifetime but simply aren't true. This one is widely believed by the vast majority of Americans: Myth #8: "Milk and dairy build strong bones."The most powerful industry in America is the dairy industry, earning over $50 billion and spending over $200 million annually to spread the lie that dairy products nutrition is necessary for human children's health. They're smart enough to target mothers (and they started, very successfully, with our grandmothers), because they can create habits for life if a child is drinking cow's milk at an early age. What are your thoughts?
